Citi Cash Back Visa Card Overseas Use

Almost everywhere in Singapore, the card technology in use is the EMV Chip. This is a more secure way of using the card because your details are shared with the merchant and verified in an encrypted form. However, in many other countries, the older magnetic stripe technology is still used.

Your Citi Cash Back Visa Credit Card has the magnetic strip, but for safety, it remains in a deactivated state unless you choose to activate it. If you are going outside Singapore and want to use the Citibank Cash Back Visa Card there, then you will have to activate the magnetic strip on your card first. This can be done by calling the Citibank Customer Care Hotline or through internet banking.

Foreign Currency Transactions Fees on Citi Cash Back Card

Purchases done in currencies other than Singapore dollars have to be converted at the day’s exchange rate before the payment is confirmed. Usually, US dollar (USD) transactions are converted directly to Singapore dollars (SGD), but any other currency is first converted into USD and then into SGD. With this Visa credit card, Australian dollar is converted into SG directly.

    • Administrative fee or foreign currency transaction fee of 2.8% of the payment amount is charged by Visa.
    • For Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), an extra 1% of the transaction amount is charged by Visa. DCC is a special service offered at certain merchants and ATMs, wherein foreign currencies are converted directly to SGD without the intermediary of USD.

    Cash Withdrawals

If you are in a situation where you need money urgently but don’t have time to go for a personal loan or line of credit, then you can resort to withdrawing money from your credit card. The amount of money you can withdraw will depend on your available credit limit. The interest rate on cash withdrawals is 26.9% p.a. which will be applicable from the day you withdraw the money. You will also have to pay a cash advance fee of 6% (minimum S$15) of the amount you withdraw. It is advisable to not go for cash withdrawals except in dire situations.
