Activating your OCBC credit card for use in Singapore or abroad is very easy. OCBC Credit Cards come with a lot of user-friendly features and one of them is convenience of use. To make your card transaction-ready locally, you need to send a short text message to the designated number or apply for it online.
For overseas use, the card activation method may be a little elaborate but extremely easy. The activation and deactivation processes have been designed to provide greater security to your transactions.
You can do it in the following ways:
To deactivate your card, get in touch with your bank representatives.
You’re expected to enable the cash withdrawal and magnetic stripe features each time before you undertake foreign travel. Keeping it perpetually activated may expose your card and the linked savings/current account to greater risks of fraud.
Overseas use of your domestic credit card may attract additional foreign transaction fees and may also involve greater risks. Hence, utmost care is recommended for activation and use.
To activate cash withdrawal, you can do any of the following:
For POS transactions, you need to activate the magnetic stripe feature of your card and deactivate it on your return to Singapore.
You can follow the same methods as above. If you’re using mobile or online banking, simply click on “Manage Overseas Card Use” under card services. Key in the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Search for your card and check the “Overseas Shop Purchases” box. You’ll have to mandatorily indicate a start and end date. You can choose to make these dates coincide with the dates of your beginning and end of foreign trip. Enter the OTP sent.
You may also visit ocbc.com/magstripe to complete the activation or deactivation of your card or visit a branch to complete the process. Don’t forget to carry your passport or NRIC details for verification purposes.
While there is no charge involved for activation and deactivation of your card for domestic usage, you’ll have to pay S$1 for auto-enrolment of SMS alerts for overseas cash withdrawal with your card.
