The merger of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China and the Standard Bank of British South Africa, in 1969, gave birth to the Standard Chartered Bank (SCB). History of the Bank
Standard Chartered Bank’s history can be traced back to 1853 when the Chartered Bank (also called the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China) came into existence. James Wilson, under a Royal Charter from Queen Victoria, founded the Chartered Bank. By 1859, the bank had opened branches in different parts of the world including Singapore.
In 1862, Standard Bank of British South Africa was founded in London by John Paterson. The bank started its operations in the year 1863 from Port Elizabeth in South Africa. By 1953, the bank had 600 offices and had a presence in Central, Southern and Eastern Africa.
The Chartered Bank and the Standard Bank of British South Africa came together to form the Standard Chartered Bank in the year 1969.
Standard Chartered Bank has been providing its services in Singapore for over 155 years. In 1999, SCB was one of the first foreign banks to get the Qualifying full Bank (QFB) license. The Singapore retail and SME business of the bank were transferred in 2013 to a local subsidiary of the bank called SCBSL (Standard Chartered Bank Singapore Limited). Post this transfer, SCBSL managed all the banking services provided to the retail and SME customers. The global business and the Technology and Operations function of SCB from Singapore.
