History of the Bank
In 1955, the Government of India, the World Bank and the representatives from the Indian industry founded the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI). ICICI was created to provide project financing to Indian businesses.
In the year 1994, ICICI established the ICICI bank as a fully owned subsidiary. In the 90's, ICICI developed itself and started providing a wide range of products and services through its subsidiaries and affiliates. For example- ICICI Bank. The shares of ICICI in the ICICI bank was reduced to 46 percent in 1998. The management of ICICI and ICICI bank later decided to merge both the entities to benefit the company and increase its value. In 2001, the merger of ICICI and ICICI Bank was approved by their Board of Directors and in the next year the High Court of Judicature in Mumbai, the High Court of Ahmedabad and the Reserve Bank of India approved the merger.
ICICI Bank’s first overseas branch was in Singapore. In 2010, the bank got the Qualifying Full Bank (QFB) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
Today, ICICI Bank has 4050 branches and 12890 ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) in India and has a presence in 16 other countries (excluding India). The bank also has subsidiaries in the United Kingdom and Canada.
