    Advisory: Beware of emails Claiming to be from SIA or DBS

    Cases of alleged phishing were reported from Singapore wherein people received emails asking them to reveal their personal and credit card details

    The police in Singapore have issued advisory to the public in general to be careful of email being sent in the name of Singapore Airlines or DBS Bank. Several people received emails in the recent past asking for their credit card details and personal information. The police said are claiming these to be phishing attempts.

    Many people who received such emails were tricked into giving up their personal information. Their credit cards were later used to make illegal financial transactions overseas. Some people found out that they have been tricked, after they got emails from a website pretending to be the website of DBS Bank, saying their internet banking accounts have been sealed because of multiple unsuccessful attempts to log in.

    Some people received fraudulent emails from Singapore Airlines asking them to participate in a customer survey and enticing them with a reward.

    Once the victims click on the link given in the fraudulent email, they are directed to a website that look a lot like either Singapore Airlines or DBS Bank. They are then requested to give up their bank account details and personal information. Later on when the victims receive one-time passwords on their registered mobile phone, they are urged to type it into the website. The victims receive a message soon after, informing them about transactions made using their credit cards.

    The DBS Bank issued official statements saying that they are aware of threats from malware, viruses and fraudulent emails targeting hapless customers on their electronic devices. They are doing their best to alert customers of any unfamiliar internet banking login experience that may be because of malware intrusions.

    DBS is urging customers to inform them immediately on hotline number 1800-111-1111 of any suspicious activity so that they can take necessary actions to shield them from any loss. DBS said no one from the bank will ask customers to give their credentials through email or phone, so customers should never disclose such information to anyone.

    Singapore Airlines also told flyers to be careful when divulging credit card details and personal data to unsubstantiated sources.
