    Joining Perks and Signup Bonuses

    When you sign up for the American Express Rewards Card, you can receive up to 24,000 Membership Rewards Points. To qualify for this offer, you have to spend minimum S$500 a month for three months from the date of card approval. You should have paid the annual fee and should not have applied for an American Express Rewards Card before. The points accumulate in the following manner:

    Earning Rewards

    This card offers Membership Rewards and the opportunity to earn bonus points to the customers.

    • You will earn 1 Membership Rewards point for every Singapore dollar you spend.
    • The points do not expire and there is no restriction on how much you can accumulate.
    • To convert the reward points into air miles, you need to accumulate a minimum of 450 Membership Rewards points.
    • You can earn bonus points on the following transactions:
      • The initial S$5,000 you spend at your chosen favourite places would earn 50% more points, which is 1.5 points per S$1 instead of 1 point.
      • Additionally, you could earn 50% more points on all purchases if you spend S$5,000 in a calendar year.
      • Transactions made during the initial 3 months of getting the card are eligible for 100% bonus points, which means 2 points per S$1.

    Redeeming your Earned Rewards

    You can club the Membership Rewards points and bonus points you earn, and exchange them for shopping and dining vouchers, and other items from the bank’s rewards catalogue. You can convert these reward points to air miles if you are registered in the Frequent Flyer Miles programme.

    You can also pay your credit card bill or make online payments (SafeKey-authorised), using your accumulated points.

    Air Miles:

    You are allowed to transfer the Membership Rewards points to air miles for the partner airlines. American Express partners with the following airlines:

    • Asia Miles
    • KrisFlyer (Singapore Airlines)
    • Avios (British Airways)
    • Dynasty Miles (China Airlines)
    • Skywards Miles (Emirates)
    • Enrich Miles (Malaysia Airlines)

    The conversion rate is 450 Membership Rewards Points = 250 miles in the respective airline’s programme. You would need to collect at least 450 Membership Rewards points to be able to make a conversion.

    You could also use the Membership Rewards points to get the points for dining at the following merchants:

    • Hilton Honors – 1,000 Membership Rewards points will fetch you 1250 Hilton Honors points
    • Starwood Preferred Guest – 100 Membership Rewards points will fetch you 33 Starpoints.

    You must collect at least 1,000 points to convert.

    Vouchers:

    Additionally, you can visit the online catalogue and choose a voucher. Log in to your card account to see the number of points available to you. Then select the voucher you’d like to redeem for with the number of points you have accumulated. The points required for each voucher would depend on the brand and the voucher value.

    Activating the Card for Overseas Expenses

    Yes, you need to activate the card for overseas use. You can do this by logging on to the website of the bank(americanexpress.com.sg/activate). Alternatively, you can call Amex’s hotline numbers. After the card is activated, you can use it immediately.

    Instalment Payment Plans Available

    All American Express credit cards issued in Singapore have an instalment payment plan feature known as Pay Small. Through Pay Small, you will be able to break your large purchases into smaller monthly payments. So you can spread the amount over a period of 6, 12, 18 or 24 months with 0% interest. However, you will have to pay your bills in full on time without fail to be eligible for the 0% interest.

    Also, you will not be eligible for any rewards with respect to charges made through Pay Small. When you are making a purchase, you will know if the merchant offers the instalment plan if there is a display sign with “Pay Small by American Express”. To use the facility, the transaction amount should be at least S$250. Additional terms and conditions are applicable.

    The following are the steps that you will need to take to use this feature:

    • Inform the staff about your interest in using Pay Small.
    • Show your American Express card.
    • Pick the instalment plan of your choice.

    There are various merchants where you can use Pay Small such as Eagle Eye Centre, Chan Brothers, Bang & Olufsen and more. With certain merchants like Mustafa and Harvey Norman, you will get special promotional offers and vouchers when you opt for Pay Small.

    Cash Withdrawal on the Credit Card

    You can withdraw up to 20% of your credit limit locally and up to USD1,000 once in 2 weeks when abroad. Both these limits are subject to your account having sufficient credit balance. The money can be withdrawn abroad as Travellers Cheques and/or cash. You will have to pay a processing fee of 5% of the amount. To purchase travellers cheque, you must pay a commission of 1%.

    You have to enrol into the Express Cash programme, and should have owned the card for more than 6 months to be able to use this feature.

    Lost/Stolen Cards

    As soon as you realise you have lost your card, inform the incident to American Express to prevent any misuse. You can call the bank’s hotline numbers from Singapore or abroad, to inform them about the case.

    If it is proved that you were not responsible for the loss or theft, you have no liabilities. You should provide the company with all support, including filing a police report and following through with it.

    However, if transactions have been made before you informed the bank, you may have to pay up to S$100 – the legal liability limit set by the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS). If you are found to have been responsible for any of the fraudulent transactions, or if the card’s PIN was lost or revealed due to your negligence then you may be held liable to pay for the transactions made on the card.

    In order to set this service up, you can download the relevant enrolment form from the bank’s website and send it to the bank through the following modes:

    Your card will be automatically renewed or replaced before the expiry of your current card, provided you don’t suspend it or the bank doesn’t suspend it.
