A Visa survey that was conducted in 2016 revealed that 8 out of 10 Singaporeans prefer using mobile payments in comparison to cash or physical cards. A total of 82% of the respondents were aware of mobile payments and 79% were likely to use these services, making Singapore a “mobile-first nation”.
There are several ways you can make contactless payments in Singapore if you own a credit card, debit card or even a prepaid card. Here’s how you can make contactless payments using your credit card and mobile phone:
Visa payWave is a contactless payment featured offered by the payment network Visa. It is a convenient and hassle-free way of making payments because it does not require a PIN or a signature to complete your transactions.
Visa payWave allows you to pay for purchases of up to S$100 using your card or even just your phone instead of carrying your card and wallet every time you step out of your home.
At the POS (point-of-sale) terminal, look for the Visa payWave or a contactless symbol. If you spot it, you can inform the cashier that you want to pay using Visa payWave. The cashier will then enter your purchase amount in the POS terminal and you can view the same on the contactless reader.
The blue light on the terminal will blink, after which you have to hold your card over the contactless reader (not more than 4cm away) to complete the transaction. First, a yellow light will appear which indicates that your transaction is being processed. When this light in on, do not remove your card from the reader.
After your transaction has been processed, a green light will appear. Now you can remove your card.
You can now pay for your purchases using just your phone if you have forgotten your card or wallet at home. Follow the steps given below:
You can make transactions up to S$100 using Visa payWave on your card or your mobile phone.
With the Mastercard PayPass you no longer have to swipe your card at any POS terminal to pay for your purchases. With this feature on Mastercard cards, you simply need to “Tap and Go”.
When checking out, look for the contactless symbol or the PayPass mark. Next, tap your card on the PayPass locator at the terminal. Make sure that your card is not more than 4cm away from the locator. Then wait for the green light to appear, indicating that your transaction is complete which will be followed by a beep. The beep indicates that the transaction has been successfully completed and you can now leave. There is no requirement for you to enter a PIN.
You can request for a receipt for your transaction if needed. Similar to Visa payWave, you can make transactions of up to S$100 using Mastercard PayPass.
