About The CIMB Bank
CIMB is one of the leading banks in the world, providing banking and financial services to its customers. It is one of the largest Islamic Banks internationally and is also one of the largest investment banks in Asia. The bank is present in 17 countries around the globe and is the fifth largest bank in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). History of the CIMB Bank
In 1924, Bian Chiang Bank was started in Malaysia. Eleven years later, Ban Hin Lee Bank was founded to provide services to the businesses at a local level in Malaysia. Later the bank also started providing finance for home and real estate. In the 90s, the bank was present in the whole of Singapore and Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Bank Lippo and Bank Niaga were established in 1948 and 1950 respectively in Indonesia. The latter started providing all the banking services in the year 1974.
Southern Bank Bhd was founded in Malaysia in 1965 and it introduced ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) to the country. In the same year, Bank Bumiputra commenced to increase the participation of Bumiputra in the economy of Malaysia. Bank Bumiputra in the 80s became the biggest bank in Malaysia and was the first bank in the country to have offices in London, New York, Bahrain, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
The United Asian Bank Bhd was formed through the union of three Indian banks such as IOB, Indian Bank and UCB. It was established in Malaysia in 1972 and was a joint- venture between India and Malaysia.
In 1974, Pertanian Baring Sanwa Multinational Bhd was founded. Later, Bian Chiang Bank's name was changed to Bank of Commerce Bhd in 1979 and Pertanian Baring Sanwa Multinational's name got changed to Commerce International Merchant Bankers Bhd (CIMB) in 1986. The Bank of Commerce achieved control in Pertanian Baring Sanwa Multinational which led to this change in name. CIMB earned huge profits in the 90s and was growing exponentially.
In 1991, Bank of Commerce merged with the United Asian Bank and Bank of Commerce Bhd's name was changed to Commerce-Asset Holdings Bhd (CAHB). Bank Bumiputra also merged with the Bank of Commerce in the year 1999, to form Bumiputra- Commerce Bank.
In 2000, Ban Hin Lee Bank was acquired by Southern Bank and in 2002 CAHB held majority shares in Bank Niaga. In 2003, CIMB was listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. In the same year, CIMB Islamic was launched in Malaysia. In 2005 and 2006, CIMB acquired Bumiputra- Commerce Bank and Southern Bank and became a universal bank in 2006.
In the year 2009, CIMB started a office in Singapore. Today, it is one of the top banks in Asia and among the best banks in the world.
